Medical translation is a highly specialised discipline and should only ever be carried out by suitably qualified translators. Knowing a foreign language alone is simply not enough. The plain truth of translation is that a text must be understood before it can be translated. Medical translation is the translation of technical, clinical or marketing documentation, software… Lire la suite Medical translations – 1

About back translations…
Back Translation' is the process of translating a document that has already been translated into a foreign language back to the original language. The nuances of translation are far-ranging. A literal word in one language, for example, may have no equivalent in another language, or could have a completely different "meaning" or effect in the translated language. This is why translation is an art rather than a science. No translation can be expected to convey perfectly the "meaning" of what consumers meant to convey in their own language. Hence the need for accredited translators who can translate verbatim. All the good work of a focus group moderator in not "interpreting" verbatim comments can be wiped out by a careless translator. Back translation can improve the reliability and validity of research in different languages by requiring that the quality of a translation is verified by an independent translator translating back into the original language. Original and back translated documents… Lire la suite About back translations…
Machine and manual translation – 1
Machine translation is also known as Computer Aided Translation, is basically the use of software programs which have been specifically designed to translate both verbal and written texts from one language to another. Trados is one of a few computer-assisted translation tools (CAT tools). Its primary function is to allow translators to reuse translations. SDL purchased Trados a few years ago, and their products are generally branded now under the name of "SDL/Trados". The advantages of using machine translation include the fact that you can make documents in several languages easily. Generally, it is rather useful for specialized texts (medical, technical, legal), I think. In my opinion any CAT tool is good for those parts of texts that repeat: if you have to translate extracts from business registers, school-leaving certificates, birth certificates, legal records or other such documents, then a CAT tool will do good. One extremely good thing is that Trados keeps the original formatting, so you usually don´t have… Lire la suite Machine and manual translation – 1
Translating and interpreting
Interpreters are often referred to as "translators" and people are not always aware of the difference between the two professions. An interpreter works with spoken words in a particular context, conveying a message from one language to another, translation refers to the activity of transferring a written text from one language to another. Interpretation is spoken, translation is written. Interpretation therefore makes use of particular linguistic resources: the original speaker's ideas are transmitted as spoken words, with a particular rhythm and intonation, making use of rhetorical devices and gestures. Interpretation is carried out in real time (simultaneously) or very close to it (consecutively). The interpreter has no time to refer to the written resources available to translators. This makes preparation before each assignment all the more essential for an interpreter. Another constraint is the extreme speed at which the interpreter has to receive, understand, manage, and reconstruct information. In interpretation communication is… Lire la suite Translating and interpreting

Translation Technology
Google translate Google's free online Translate service has been a popular tool, but the company has big ambitions. In May, it bought Quest Visual, which makes the clever Word Lens app. That involves pointing your smartphone's camera at signs in the real world for instant translations. Google Glass Visual translation is also moving to wearable devices such as Google Glass. Word Lens launched for Glass last November and involves holding your head still while looking at a sign, then saying: "OK Glass, translate this." Skype Translator Microsoft, for example, has shown off an app, Skype Translator, which provides translations as people speak to one another in different languages. It will launch for Windows 8 devices later this year and has been compared to the Universal Translator gadget in "Star Trek". EBay The online shopping… Lire la suite Translation Technology
