Interpreters are often referred to as "translators" and people are not always aware of the difference between the two professions. An interpreter works with spoken words in a particular context, conveying a message from one language to another, translation refers to the activity of transferring a written text from one language to another. Interpretation is spoken, translation is written. Interpretation therefore makes use of particular linguistic resources: the original speaker's ideas are transmitted as spoken words, with a particular rhythm and intonation, making use of rhetorical devices and gestures. Interpretation is carried out in real time (simultaneously) or very close to it (consecutively). The interpreter has no time to refer to the written resources available to translators. This makes preparation before each assignment all the more essential for an interpreter. Google translate Google's free online Translate service has been a popular tool, but the company has big ambitions. In May, it bought Quest Visual, which makes the clever Word Lens app. That involves pointing your smartphone's camera at signs in the real world for instant translations. Google Glass Visual translation is also moving to wearable devices such as Google Glass. Word Lens launched for Glass last November and involves holding your head still while looking at a sign, then saying: "OK Glass, translate this." Skype Translator Microsoft, for example, has shown off an app, Skype Translator, which provides translations as people speak to one another in different languages. It’s well documented that the translation industry has been growing for a number of years and will continue to so. It appears to be continuing straight on at the crossroads without fully appreciating what options are to the left and right. -To the right are clients trying to work out how to sell to new cultures -To the left are the IT developers with all their enthusiasm, gadgets and gizmos. Clients: Clients are not translators. They do not appreciate the risks. They do not know how to outline the different translation services they require. They want something more than appears to be on offer. Some human translations provided seem little better than machine translations to them. MT developers: Meanwhile, MT developers are enthusiastically trying to replace interpreters and translators. That may not be their intention. It is certainly the risk.
